Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin’s Contributions to the History of Islamic Science Developed in al-Andalus

Cumhur Ersin Adıgüzel

Al-Andalus, a part of the Islamic world for approximately eight centuries, was one of the important centers of science in connection with scientific developments in the Islamic world particularly between the 10th and 13th centuries. Works written by Andalusian scholars in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, cartography, medicine, pharmacy, botany and philosophy were carefully followed and examined by Christian or Jewish scientists interested in these fields. Therefore, these works made significant contributions to the development of scientific studies in the West through translations from Arabic to Hebrew and Latin, even sometimes while the authors were still alive. Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin, an eminent historian of science, appreciated the significance of the history of Islamic science in al-Andalus and thus al-Andalus took a remarkable place in his works. In fact, Sezgin only devoted some his thematic studies, such as historical geography and the transmission of Islamic philosophy, to the West, while the rest was devoted to al-Andalus in addition to his individual-centered works such as his study of the versatile scholar Ibn Sīd al-Batalyawsī, the astronomy scholar al-Zarqālī and studies on Ibn Bājja, Ibn Tufayl, Ibn Rushd and Ibn Sab‘īn, who were the main representatives of the philosophical thought developed at al-Andalus. This study aims to investigate the contributions of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin regarding the works published by Muslim scholars in al-Andalus which stood out as an important science center at the western edge of Islamic civilization. Our study also includes an examination of his scientific studies on these works.

Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin’in Endülüs’te Gelişen İslam Bilim Tarihi Çalışmalarına Katkıları
