A new example for winter tourism centers: Hesarek Mountain (Bingöl-Turkey)

Vedat AvcıFatma Esen

Our country, located in the middle zone, has favorable conditions for winter tourism due to high and rugged topography. For this reason, there are winter tourism centers in different regions of our country. In this study, it is aimed to introduce the winter tourism center of Hesarek Mountain in the west of Bingöl. For this purpose, physical (slope, elevation, aspect) and human environmental conditions and climate characteristics of the area where winter tourism center was established were analyzed. In this study, numerical data belonging to Digital Elevation Model (DEM), climate data of Bingöl Meteorology Station and ski center constitute the basic data. Hesarek Mountain ski resort is located near Dikme village, 25 km from Bingol. The ski resort, which was established on the north-facing slopes of the mountain, began operations in December 2015. There are 3 runways between the elevations of 2250-1920 m in Haserek Mountain and the runway length is maximum 1600 m. The ski season covers the period from 1 December to 1 April. The ski center has a 70-bed service house and cafeterias operated by the Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports. Transportation to Hesarek Mountain is provided by asphalt road from Dikme and Yolçatı villages. In the center, where physical conditions such as slope, aspect, elevation and climate are favorable, an increase is observed in the number of visitors with festivals and promotional activities organized in recent years. However, as these studies are not sufficient, Hesarek Dağı has not yet gained a touristic attraction. For this reason, promotional activities, incentives and trainings for winter sports should be increased. The distance of the center from Elazığ to the neighboring provinces is 120 km and the distance to Diyarbakır is 165 km. Especially the winter tourism facilities are limited and the ski center can be transformed into a center of attraction for Diyarbakır, which has a population of over 1 million. Existing facilities that meet the daily needs of the visitors should be developed and additional investments should be made. The ski center and its surroundings are located on the Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone and Karakoçan Fault Zone. Therefore, the earthquake risk of the region should be taken into consideration.
