Effect of urban planning on urban formations based on the effect of bioclimatic comfort: a case study on Bursa City

Rapid and unplanned urbanization owing to global economic development has resulted in dysfunctional and aesthetic city structures. During the process of urbanization, the importance of various concepts, such as environmental balance, clean environment, and bioclimatic comfort has considerably increased because of the increased income level and awareness of the people residing in urban centers. Therefore, these concepts are becoming important factors that influence the selection of cities for dwelling. Bioclimatic comfort is one such concept that can be defined as the limits within which people feel comfortable with respect to the environmental conditions, including the temperature, precipitation, humidity, and wind speed. The interaction between the natural and cultural factors reinforces the importance of bioclimatic comfort. When people reside in areas having appropriate climatic factors, they feel vigorous and comfortable; however, when bioclimatic comfort is not within the appropriate range, people feel stressed and tend to migrate elsewhere. The data obtained in the form of mean temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), and wind speed (m/s) from the meteorological stations in the city of Bursa in Turkey were transferred to the geographic information system (GIS) using the ArcGIS 10.5 software. Subsequently, interpolation was conducted using the cokriging method, and climate maps (average temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed) were created in this study based on the climatic characteristics of Bursa. In addition, bioclimatic comfort status of Bursa was determined using the ENVI-MET software on the climatic datas of the study area. The developed climate maps that can be used to obtain a bioclimatic comfort status similar to the locally obtained one can be considered as the benchmarks when planning further urbanization at any location. Furthermore, ensuring an appropriate bioclimatic comfort status when performing landscape planning and design will enable people to live with improved comfort and less stress.
