The importance of wet areas and an example for the evaluation of tourism (Kızılırmak delta plain)

Hüseyin MertolPınar ÖzelFatih OcakŞirin Çetin

Delta and lagoons, including many biosphere elements, are vital areas in humans. The main element of wetland ecosystems is water. The Kızılırmak Delta also has a rich habitat diversity, where all of the wetlands components are found. Kızılırmak Delta is the third largest delta in Turkey and the second largest delta in the Black Sea coastal zone. On 15 April 1998, it was included in the list of wetlands protection (Ramsar) Convention. It is subject to the Wildlife Protection and Development Regulation. Protected by UNESCO. In addition, a large part of the Kızılırmak Delta has been declared a natural site. Common fish species in lagoon lakes in Delta are carp, mullet, sudak and kerevite (Freshwater Lobster). Wetlands are the habitat of many bird species, while they also provide opportunities for bird observation. 465 bird species have been identified in Turkey. 352 bird species were observed in the area. Turkey takes advantage of its natural attractiveness in terms of Tourism. Around wetlands, camping, watching landscapes, taking pictures, hiking, hunting, picnicking, cycling and wildlife are recreation areas used to observe. These areas have a great potential in terms of eco-tourism. In recent years, wetlands are at risk.
