Transformation of sports and sports areas in Gaziantep

Uğurcan Ayikİbrahim İnak

Geographers have handled sports on various grounds at different periods. Early studies have predominantly been dominated by environmentalist and cultural deterministic approaches. Nowadays, sports geography studies have evolved into several different dimensions including economic and spatial aspects of sports and thus sports geography studies have become very paradigmatic. Gaziantep, a prominent city in the southeast of Turkey, entered a process of reconstruction and reconstruction to eliminate the effects of the Turkish Independence War. As a part of it, sports and sports-related grounds came to the fore front. This study investigates at macro scale Gaziantep’s relation with sports from the earliest years of the Republic up to date. At micro scale, the study aims to shed light onto the role and evolution of sports grounds in terms of land use. As the main source of data, the development plans made for Gaziantep in various periods were applied in this study. Among others; the plans such as 1938 Jansen, 1950 Kemal Ahmet Arü, 1973 Gaziantep Development Plan, and 1990 Oğuz Aldan Plans were utilized. They were digitized in ArcGIS 10.3 and the roles of the sports grounds in the planning and practical stages were discussed. As the second important source, athlete data were obtained from Gaziantep Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports. Those data were used for the purpose of this study by evaluating in the context of Gaziantep and Turkey. The last source of study data consisted of sports grounds offered by Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality as well as the two sub-provincial municipalities; Şahinbey and Şehitkamil Municipalities. Again, the data were mapped by using ArcGIS 10.3 to reveal distribution of the current sports grounds across Gaziantep. As a result of the study, it was found out that traditional sports held a leading position in Gaziantep in the past, while they are now replaced by modern sports, especially football, and related sports grounds. As an indirect consequence of it, traditional sports peculiar to Antep like Aba wrestling disappeared. Our prediction is that modern sports and connected grounds will continue to be the dominant sports facilities in the city unless radical changes are made in sports policies.
