Sweet Dreams in the Middle of a Storm: COVID-19 Pandemic and Sleep

Sleep is essential for the physical, mental and emotional wellness of the humans. From effectively fighting against infections to coping with the stress brought on by these difficult times, even the attention necessary to take personal precautions and to avoid reckless mistakes depends on a “good night’s sleep”. Sleep is fragile in as much as it is vital. It is affected by both internal processes of the human body and all external factors that we are exposed to during our interaction with the world. The interplay between sleep and the extraordinary conditions brought on by the pandemic as well as SARS-CoV-2 infection itself is of the uttermost importance, both for the healthy and for the sick. The effects of the pandemic on sleep disorders and the effects of sleep disorders on pandemic and the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection should be reckoned thoroughly. COVID-19 pandemic has altered our every-day and -naturally- nightlife drastically. Having a good night’s sleep, the foundation stone of being healthy, is an important precaution against COVID-19, as vital as wearing a mask, distancing and washing hands. Actions should be taken quickly in order to perform necessary clinical studies and informing public on this important matter.

Fırtınanın Ortasında Güzel Rüyalar: COVID-19 Pandemisi ve Uyku

Uyku insanın fiziksel, bilişsel ve duygusal iyiliği için hayati önemdedir. Enfeksiyonla etkin bir biçimde savaşmaktan bu zorlu koşulların yarattığı stresörlerle başa çıkmaya, hatta kişisel koruyucu önlemleri özenle uygulayıp dikkatsizliklerden sakınmaya kadar her şeyin temelinde “gece iyi bir uyku çekmiş olmak” yatmaktadır. Uyku hayati olduğu kadar da kırılgandır. Hem kişinin bedeninde süregiden tüm internal süreçlerin, hem de kişinin maruz kaldığı tüm dış etmenler ile dünyayla etkileşiminin tesiri altında kalır. Dolayısıyla küresel salgın gibi olağanüstü koşulların ve COVID-19’un uyku ile etkileşimi hasta veya sağlıklı tüm bireyler için göz önünde tutulması gereken en önemli faktörlerden biridir. Küresel salgın sürecinin beraberinde getirdiği yeni yaşam biçiminin ve hatta enfeksiyonun kendisinin kişilerin uyku sağlığına ve hastalıklarına etkisinin olması kaçınılmaz görünmektedir. Hali hazırda var olan uyku hastalıklarının da küresel salgın döneminin yarattığı koşullara uyum sağlamak hususunda etkili olacağı göz önünde tutulmalıdır. Bunun yanında, komorbid uyku hastalıklarının, COVID-19 fizyopatolojisi ve prognozu üzerine etkisi de mutlaka değerlendirilmelidir. COVID-19 küresel salgını dünyamızın alıştığımız gündüzünü değiştirdiği gibi gecesini de değiştirmiştir. Dolayısıyla sağlık açısından çok büyük önemi olan uykumuzu korumak da küresel salgına karşı tıpkı diğer el yıkama, sosyal mesafe, maske gibi önlemler kadar önemlidir. Bu alanda küresel salgın sürecinde klinik bilimsel çalışmalar kadar halkı bilgilendirmeye yönelik tedbirlerin de hızla alınması gerekmektedir.
