A General Overview of Research in History of Disability

Disability Studies developed in parallel with the disability rights movement, starting in North America and Europe in the 1980’s, and subsequently spreading around the globe. This development soon influenced the field of history, with disability becoming a point of analysis in research. Studies to this end have demonstrated that the concept of disability is a social construct rather than a natural category. As the scope of research expanded in terms of time and geography, social, and cultural differences in the definition of disability became increasingly visible. This paper briefly outlines the development of the history of disability around the world, its situation in AmericanEuropean and Middle Eastern-Islamic scholarship, and relevant studies in Turkey.

Engellilik Tarihi Araştırmalarına Genel Bir Bakış

Engellilik Çalışmaları, 1980’lerde Kuzey Amerika ve İngiltere’den başlayarak zaman içinde dünya geneline yayılan engelli hakları hareketi doğrultusunda gelişen bir alandır. Bu gelişme ile paralel olarak etkileri kısa süre içinde tarih alanında da görülmüş ve 2000’li yıllardan itibaren engellilik tarihsel bir analiz konusu halini almıştır. Bu yönde yapılan araştırmalar, engellilik kavramının kendiliğinden var olan bir şey değil, sosyal bir kurgu olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Araştırmaların zamansal ve coğrafi kapsamı genişledikçe, engellilik tanımının kültüre ve topluma göre değiştiği giderek daha belirgin hale gelmiştir. Bu çalışma, engellilik tarihi araştırmalarının dünyadaki gelişimine, Amerika-Avrupa ekseninde ve Ortadoğu-İslam dünyasında durumuna, ardından da Türkiye’deki çalışmalara genel bir bakış sunmaktadır.
