Essays on Disability History
Disability in Utopias
Yunus BucukaAnthropologists assert that, just as disability is universal, all cultures conceive utopias which are imaginary versions of society. In other words, utopias have historical and universal characteristics. “Politeia” by Plato in Ancient Greece, on the other hand, was the first utopian work in written literature. It is thus an essential text for comprehending how utopias approach disability, given its universality and the historical contexts of utopias. Accordingly, this study prioritizes qualitative content analysis in investigating the utopias of Plato, Thomas More, Tommaso Campanella, and Francis Bacon. It is concluded that utopias considered various aspects of disability: while disabled people are excluded from the community in the ideal society of Plato’s utopia, they are supported medically and emotionally. In Campanella, the disabled take their places in society through employment, and in Bacon they are supported through scientific efforts especially for their treatment. A eugenic approach is also observed in Plato and Campanella’s utopias.
