An Immigrant User Experience Research: Review of the E-residency Site

The continuous evolution in the internet technologies has contributed to the design of websites and user interfaces that suit different users. ‘Universal’ designs have been obtained for different groups such as disabled people, elderly people, children and users from different cultures. With the proliferation of immigration movements, websites containing “Internationalization” and “Localization” processes, which will include immigrant groups, have been designed. International students, who have started to be evaluated within the immigrant groups, also need to use their country of residences’ official websites to obtain a residence permit or to extend the residence permit. The aim of this study is to examine the e-residence website (which is linked to the immigration authority that the international students who come to Turkey uses for a residence permit application or extension of residence permit procedures), in terms of migration sociology and intercultural user experience. The research was completed with the task observation and semi-structured interview techniques with 8 international students. The findings are discussed under the headings of the website, translation, form structure and application process, cultural differences and motivation. In general, translation-related problems are encountered on the site and it is observed that due attention is not paid to cultural differences. The difficulties experienced in the application process originating from the website negatively affect the motivation and adaptation process of international students.

Bir Göçmen Kullanıcı Deneyimi Araştırması: E-İkamet Sitesinin İncelenmesi

İnternet teknolojilerinin giderek gelişmesi web sitelerinin ve kullanıcı arayüzlerinin birçok farklı gruba hitap edecek şekilde tasarlanmasına katkı sağlamıştır. Engelliler, yaşlılar, çocuklar, farklı kültürlerden kullanıcılar gibi farklı grupları için ‘evrensel’ tasarımlar dizayn edilmiştir. Göç hareketlerinin yaygınlaşması ile göçmen gruplarını da kapsayacak ‘Uluslararasılaştırma’ ve ‘Yerelleştirme’ süreçlerini içeren web siteleri tasarlanmaya başlanmıştır. Göçmen grupları içinde değerlendirilmeye başlanan uluslararası öğrenciler de bulundukları ülkelerde oturum izni almak veya oturum iznini uzatmak için resmi web sitelerini kullanmak durumundadırlar. Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkiye’ye gelen uluslararası öğrencilerin oturum izni alma veya oturum iznini uzatma başvurusu için kullandıkları göç idaresine bağlı e-ikametgâh sitesinin göç sosyolojisi ve kültürlerarası kullanıcı deneyimi bağlamından incelenmesidir. Araştırma 8 uluslararası öğrenciyle görev gözlemi ve yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniğiyle tamamlanmıştır. Bulgular web sitesi, çeviri, form yapısı ve başvuru süreci, kültürel farklılıklar ve motivasyon başlıkları altında tartışılmıştır. Genel olarak, sitede çeviri ile ilgili problemlerle karşılaşılmakta, kültürel farklılıklara gerekli özen gösterilmediği görülmektedir. Web sitesinden kaynaklı başvuru sürecinde yaşanan sıkıntılar uluslararası öğrencilerin motivasyon ve adaptasyon sürecini olumsuz yönde etkilemektedir.
