Süleyman Pasha, the Conquerer of Rumelia: Problems and Remarks
There are many gaps around and false approaches to the life and military–political activities of Süleyman Pasha, the Prince of Orhan Bey, known as the conqueror of Rumelia. Suleyman Pasha was the head of the armies crossing to Rumelia. This article mainly focuses on the fact that the mother of Süleyman Pasha was not Nilüfer Hatun but Efdenze/Efendize and that his birth date should be noted as around 1310. This date is earlier than known in the literature. Furthermore, this article reveals that his name is confused with other men named Süleyman Çelebi. Three other men named Süleyman Çelebi existed and had the identical titles, who endowed or founded waqifs in the same region during different times. The sources of the period and the archival documents shed light upon the events of the life of Süleyman Pasha.
RUMELİ FÂTİHİ SÜLEYMAN PAŞA’YA DAİR BAZI MESELELER VE NOTLAR
Rumeli fâtihi olarak nitelenen Orhan Bey’in şehzadesi Süleyman Paşa’nın hayatı ve faaliyetleri konusunda derin boşluklar ve hatalı yakıştırmalar mevcuttur. Rumeli’ye ilk geçen Osmanlı kuvvetlerinin başında bulunan Süleyman Paşa’nın, öncelikle annesinin Nilüfer Hatun değil Efdenze/Efendize olduğu, doğum tarihinin de belirtilenlerin aksine daha geriye 1310’a çekilebileceği kuvvetle vurgulanmıştır. Ayrıca onun ile ilgili vakıf kayıtlarında adının diğer Süleyman Çelebi’ler ile karıştırıldığı, aynı bölgede değişik tarihlerde vakıflar kuran veya bağışlayan aynı isim ve unvanla zikredilen üç ayrı Süleyman Çelebi’nin bulunduğu tesbit edilmiştir. Süleyman Paşa’nın hayatıyla ilgili meselelere temas edilerek bunlar dönemin kaynaklarının ve arşiv belgelerinin ışığında çözülmeye çalışılmıştır.
