İstanbul University Journal of Sociology is pleased to announce our special issue titled “Community Resilience to Disruptive Natural Disasters,” and we welcome your submissions.

As the world confronts more frequent and more destructive natural disasters, strategies for building resilient communities become increasingly important. Community resilience is defined as the ability of communities to anticipate, cope with, recover from, and adapt to human, natural, and technological crises. While it is inevitable that natural disasters will impact communities, it is possible to reduce their destructiveness by building more resilient communities.

The distribution of resources and opportunities across the world is not equitable. Many natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tropical cyclones, floods, landslides, and forest fires, increasingly threaten underserved communities around the world with devastating consequences in many parts of the world. Recent multiple earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, caused the death of tens of thousands of people and billions of dollars in economic losses. Citizens and scientists, among others, rightly ask the following questions: How resilient is our society against destructive natural disasters, especially earthquakes? How can we build communities and cities that can support fast restoration of services in the face of disasters? Which processes and mechanisms contribute to increasing the ability of communities to respond to disasters? What social, institutional, and organizational conditions impact communities’ ability to reduce the impact of disasters? How can we operationalize scientific and practical resilience approaches to combat natural disasters? What lessons can we learn from successful global practices to increase the resilience of our society?

This special issue aims to bring together effective community resilience approaches and the results of successful global practices to shed light on how to construct community resilience against natural disasters. Specifically, we welcome papers that discuss the impact of natural disasters on a community’s resilience in terms of functionality loss and the recovery process, the measurement of uncertainties in community resilience modeling, resilience approaches developed to counteract the effects of natural disasters, and critical lessons learned from existing practices to increase community resilience.

While all topics will be considered, the following thematic domains will be prioritized in the papers to be included in the special issue:

  • Concepts, approaches, models, frameworks, and toolkits for community resilience
  • Citizen participation in disaster governance and community resilience
  • Management and assessment of uncertainties in modeling community resilience
  • Successful community resilience approaches and practices in the world
  • The role of social, economic, political, and cultural factors in disaster preparedness, coping, and recovery processes
  • Modeling the improvement in community functions after natural disasters
  • Use of artificial intelligence and other new technologies in community resilience
  • Social cohesion and disaster response
  • Social media analysis and coordination of disaster relief
  • Early warning systems and community resilience
  • Disaster risk awareness and preparedness

All submitted manuscripts will undergo a double-blind peer-review process. Manuscripts that are not related to the scope of the special issue, are not in the correct format, or do not follow the author guidelines will be returned without review.
