Candida glabrata: Laboratory Diagnosis and Microbiological Characteristics, Epidemiology, Virulence Factors and Clinical Diseases

Candida glabrata is a yeast genus fungus that can be found in the normal flora of healthy individuals and can lead to various infections in humans. Candida species cause local infections as well as fatal systemic infections. Recent years have seen an increase in the isolation rate of non-Candida albicans species, especially Candida glabrata. The most important reason for this increase is the change in factor distribution with prophylactic and empirical use of fluconazole. There are articles in the world and in our country reporting that the second isolation frequency after C. albicans is Candida glabrata. Unlike other Candida species, C. glabrata are not dimorphic; C. glabrata are found both commensally and pathogenically as blastoconidia. C. glabrata infections are difficult to treat and are often resistant to many azole antifungal agents, especially fluconazole. As a result, C. glabrata infections are among infections with a high mortality rate.

Candida glabrata: Laboratuvar Tanısı ve Mikrobiyolojik Özellikleri, Epidemiyolojisi, Virulans Faktörleri ve Klinik Hastalıkları

Candida glabrata, sağlıklı bireylerin normal florasında bulunabilen ve insanlarda çeşitli enfeksiyonlara yol açabilen maya cinsi bir mantardır. Candida türleri lokal enfeksiyonların yanı sıra ölümcül seyreden sistemik enfeksiyonlara da neden olmaktadır. Son yıllarda Candida albicans dışı türlerin, özellikle de C. glabrata izolasyon oranında artış görülmektedir. Bu artışın en önemli nedeni, flukonazolün profilaktik ve ampirik olarak kullanımı ile etken dağılımının değişmesidir. Dünyada ve ülkemizde C. glabrata’nın C. albicans’tan sonra 2. sıklıkta izole edilen tür olduğunu bildiren çalışmalar bulunmaktadır. Diğer Candida türlerinin aksine, C. glabrata dimorfik değildir hem komensal hem de patojen olarak blastokonidia yapısına sahiptir. C. glabrata enfeksiyonlarının tedavisi zordur ve sıklıkla birçok azol grubu antifungal ilaca, özellikle flukonazole dirençlidir. Sonuç olarak, C. glabrata enfeksiyonları ölüm oranı yüksek enfeksiyonlar arasındadır.
