Civil Service Idadi School of the Gümülcine

Mahir Aydın

In Gümülcine, one of the most populated sanjak of the Edirne Province, schools providing modern-style education were opened in 1882, as was the case throughout the country. After the opening of the first graded schools in the fashion of ibtidai and rüştiye, a higher level secondary school, which is an idadi, is planned to be opened. After the necessary infrastructure was provided with the support of the Maarif Nezareti and the people of Gümülcine, the school, Gümülcine İdadi, started its educational activities in the year of 1889/1890. A period of twenty years of activity for this school, which was formed as a result of great efforts, will also be an important example of the processes that the Ottoman State encountered in the way of having modern educational institutions.
