The Effects of Greek Rebellion on Serbia and Problem of the Serbian Deputies in Istanbul

Nurbanu Duran

The Serbians, who had rebelled against the Ottoman Empire twice in 1804-13 and 1815, were regarded by the government as potential rebels during the Greek uprising. The fact that the Ottoman Empire knew the relationship between Serbian Knez (Prince) Miloš and Filik-i Eterya further supported this view. Accordingly, the Serbian delegation, who went to Istanbul to convey Serbian demands just before the Greek rebellion, became a trump card for the Ottoman Empire against the potential Serbian uprising and was arrested in Istanbul. Not knowing even what their crime was, the delegation stayed imprisoned in İstanbul for almost five and a half years, and the situation turned into almost a diplomatic crisis within this period. Russia, involving in the process, included the condition of releasing the Serbian Delegation in İstanbul into the Ultimatum which would later lead to the Treaty of Akkerman. Briefly the Ottoman Empire kept the Serbians under control with a clever policy but the process came to an end in favor of Serbians due to Russian intervention.

YUNAN ISYANININ SIRBISTAN’A ETKILERI VE ISTANBUL’DAKI SIRP VEKILLERI MESELESI

Nurbanu Duran
