Exercise in the Time of Pandemic Era: Physical Activity During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals’ physical activity levels have been restricted. Individuals could not continue their daily routines while quarantine and isolation measurements were in place. With the uncertainty of the pandemic in their houses or in smaller places, it has become a burden for individuals to continue their lives as they used to. This situation has affected both the physical and the mental health of individuals. The benefits of regular physical activity for different systems have been shown in various studies carried out to date. It is also important to try to reach the recommended physical activity levels while precautions against spread of COVID-19 are taken. The current guidelines recommend moderate aerobic and physical ACTIVITY for a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days a week, or a minimum 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity 3 days a week. Resistance exercises including larger muscle groups are also recommended minimum 2 days a week. Adding adequate and appropriate physical activity to our daily lives will be beneficial in preventing chronic diseases, which has and will continue to be seen during the pandemic era and afterwards, while also having positive effects on individuals’ psychological well-being.

Pandemi Günlerinde Egzersiz: COVID-19 Sürecinde Fiziksel Aktivite

COVID-19 küresel salgın sürecinde bireylerin aktiviteleri gönüllü veya zorunlu birtakım kısıtlamalara uğramıştır. Bireyler karantina ve izolasyon önlemlerinin alındığı süreçte günlük rutinlerine devam edememiştir. Bireyler için evde veya normal yaşam tarzlarında olduğundan çok daha kısıtlı bir alanda ve küresel salgın belirsizliği ile hayatlarını devam ettirmek bir yük haline gelmeye başlamıştır. Bu durumun bireylerin hem bedensel hem de psikolojik sağlıklarını etkilediği düşünülmektedir. Düzenli yapılan fiziksel aktivitenin kardiyovasküler sistem, kas-iskelet sistemi ve insan psikolojisi üzerinde olumlu etkilerinin olduğu günümüze kadar yapılan birçok çalışmada gösterilmiştir. COVID-19 yayılımını engellemek için önlemlerin alındığı bu süreçte de önerilen fiziksel aktivite seviyesine ulaşmayı hedeflemek önemlidir. Güncel kılavuzlarda haftada 5 gün en az 30 dakika orta yoğunlukta veya haftada 3 gün en az 20 dakika yüksek yoğunlukta aerobik fiziksel aktivite ile beraber haftada en az 2 gün büyük kas gruplarına yönelik kuvvet egzersizlerinin yapılması önerilmektedir. Günlük yaşamlarımıza uygun ve yeterli fiziksel aktiviteyi ekleyebildiğimizde, fiziksel aktivitenin olumlu etkilerinden faydalanma olasılığımız artmaktadır. Bireylerin günlük hayatlarına fiziksel aktiviteyi katabilmek için elinden gelen çabayı göstermesi hem küresel salgın sürecinde hem de sonrasında görülebilecek kronik hastalıkların önlenmesinde fayda sağlamasının yanısıra bireylerin psikolojileri üzerinde de olumlu etkiler sağlayacaktır.
