Sustainable Water Management: Ecology of Freshwater Benthic Macroinvertebrates

Serap Koşal ŞahinNilay Dökümcü

Anthropogenic activities and globalization have had a significant impact on numerous regions worldwide. Biodiversity and ecosystems are under immense stress due to climate change and species emergence. Freshwater resources are particularly vulnerable to environmental and human-related issues, such as population growth, urbanization, food demands, and decreasing precipitation. Investigating biodiversity in freshwater resources and understanding the relationships between groups and environmental parameters is crucial for water protection. Biological and physicochemical assessments provide reliable results in determining water quality. Benthic macroinvertebrate fauna studies are the primary means of achieving this goal. The composition of macroinvertebrates impacts on water quality parameters related to anthropogenic disturbances and is crucial for the sustainability of water bodies. This study reveals the general characteristics and ecology of the main benthic macroinvertebrate groups that are ecologically significant in freshwater. Macroinvertebrate composition influences water quality parameters related to anthropogenic disturbances and is vital for water sustainability.
