The Role and Importance of Aquatic Resources in Food Security

Nuray Erkan

Throughout history, aquatic resources have played a significant role in nutrition, economy, and culture. Seas, lakes, and rivers have been fundamental food sources in regions where great civilisations developed, with fish and aquatic products shaping the socio-economic structure of societies. Regarding food security, fisheries and aquaculture are critical for sustainable and healthy nutrition. Today, global aquaculture production is rapidly increasing and is expected to play a significant role in ensuring food security in the future. With their high protein and nutritional value, aquatic resources are essential for healthy nutrition and have environmentally friendly and sustainable production potential. Additionally, the aquaculture sector makes substantial contributions to economic growth. Globally, developing fisheries resources and reducing environmental impacts are crucial in combating hunger and malnutrition. The role of aquatic resources in ensuring food security is increasingly important, and their sustainable management will remain critical. Within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the “Zero Hunger” and “Life Below Water” goals focus on food security and the protection of aquatic ecosystems, promoting the sustainable use of aquatic resources. The “Responsible Consumption and Production” goal also emphasises adopting sustainable and responsible production techniques, which is crucial in ensuring food safety and environmental sustainability. Increasing fishery production and ensuring environmental sustainability are critical components of food security that align with these goals.

Gıda Güvencesi̇nde Akuati̇k Kaynakların Yeri̇ ve Önemi̇

Nuray Erkan
