ChatGPT and Nursing Education: Could Be a New Learning Resource?

Ayşe Çiçek Korkmaz

Technological advancements continuously transform and renew nursing education. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into education signifies a new era in this field. In this context, ChatGPT, an AI-based language modeling system, stands out for its potential to expand access to information and learning processes. The integration of ChatGPT into nursing education presents various opportunities for students and educators, bringing significant challenges. For students, ChatGPT holds the potential to revolutionize learning processes with innovative features such as personalized learning, rapid feedback, emotional support, generating case scenarios, and focusing on problem-solving learning. This advanced AI model can offer unique opportunities to enhance nursing students’ learning experience and critical thinking skills. ChatGPT can reduce workload and save time and energy for educators in processes like lesson planning and curriculum design, providing personalized learning support for students, responding to student inquiries, and facilitating rapid assessment and evaluation. However, the integration of ChatGPT into nursing education also brings challenges such as issues with accuracy and reliability, academic integrity violations, inequity in access, over-reliance and decline in skills, difficulty in distinguishing responses, lack of human interaction, data privacy and security, bias, and discrimination, and cultural sensitivity. Therefore, it is crucial to carefully address these challenges and balance them with the opportunities to realize the potential of ChatGPT in nursing education fully. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of ChatGPT in nursing education, the opportunities it offers, and the challenges that may be encountered.
