Metaverse and Dentistry

Ümit Begüm Güray EfesAyşe Dina Erdilek

Rapidly advancing technology has a significant impact on education. This development has both positive and negative aspects; many studies aim to understand these factors. This way, technology can be used more effectively in education. In particular, in dental education, simulators supported by virtual reality and augmented reality enhance students’ learning both before and after clinical practice. With 3D visualizations, students can better learn structures they cannot see. Simulators offer many skill development opportunities, such as cavity cleaning, filling, and surgical procedures. The use of virtual simulations improves students’ motor skills, self-confidence, and knowledge, leading to better treatment outcomes and ensuring patient safety. This systematic review was conducted using the PreferredReporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. In the field of dentistry, educators, clinicians, and students need to know today’s learning technologies and their interaction in the metaverse. This systematic review aims to provide information about the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning, traditional e-learning, integration of virtual reality, and augmented reality-supported simulators used in education and to investigate the interaction of dentistry education in the metaverse. E-learning studies with the metaverse have generally given positive responses and filled many gaps, but the metaverse world is still under development.
