A Panoramic Journey Through Türkiye’s Touring Theatrical Landscape
This article provides a comprehensive exploration of the history of touring theatre in Türkiye, an often overlooked aspect in the country’s theatrical narrative. Existing scholarly works on Turkish theatre history have predominantly catalogued theatrical activities or analysed dramatic texts while leaving touring theatre, a significant historical phenomenon, underexamined. The transient nature of touring troupes, coupled with the absence of comprehensive records, has contributed to the neglect of this aspect in theatre history studies. Drawing on available sources, including interviews, memoirs, and historical articles, the article sheds light on the development of touring theatre in Türkiye, focusing on key periods, influential figures, and the socio-political contexts that shaped its trajectory. It seeks to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of Turkish theatre history by unravelling the experiences, challenges and contributions of touring theatre to the cultural landscape, aiming to fill a notable gap in existing scholarship.
