(Re)considering Turkish Theatre in the Republic’s Centenary
Ethical Regime in the Early Republican Theatre
Regime of arts is the term founded by Jacques Rancière to bring out the relationship between art and politics and to discuss the atmosphere that shapes artistic practises from the past to the present. The ethical regime is a category of the term, which means disregarding aesthetic values and taking moral and political judgments as a base for artistic practises. Artistic practises in Türkiye in the Early Republican era were considered as an element of the nationbuilding process and served to construct a national culture. These practises are discussed in relation to Rancière’s definition of the ethical regime, focusing on the theatre practises of the Early Republican period. This study will mention an essential institution for the Early Republican theatre Darülbedayi, emphasising its repertoires to highlight how educational, moral and political judgments have shaped the art of theatre.
