(Re)considering Turkish Theatre in the Republic’s Centenary
One may argue that Türkiye’s theatre “scene” has a dynamic diversity with various visions, notably in the previous 30 years. I concentrate this paper’s attention on the physical theatre subgenre, where the body and movement are emphasised, as one of these varied fields with a distinctive vision of its own. I propose to examine the history of physical theatre in Türkiye primarily through two examples, both of which may not initially be identified as exact examples of the genre: Canlanan Mekan (Revitalised Space) and Gergedanlaşma (Rhinocerosization), both performed in the 90s, in Istanbul followed by other examples allowing to discuss contemporary dance and performative strategies connected to the theatrical lexicon. The goal is to look for possibilities of an alternative lane/approach/ vision within the political language of theatre that has been geographically adopted from stages in its own West.
