Metin And as a Ballet Critic
This article focuses on the ballet criticism of And, who is primarily recognised as a well-known scholar and an eminent theatre and ballet critic in Türkiye. After providing a brief overview of Metin And’s development into a critic, the article delves into the history of ballet in Türkiye. It then discusses the ballet criticism of Metin And, who received a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and studied ballet criticism in the USA. He started writing ballet critiques in 1954 for Forum magazine and continued this practise for 15 years, starting in 1957, in the Ulus newspaper. The reason for concentrating on his ballet criticism is that ballet was a newly developing art form in Türkiye during the fifties and And accompanied the developments in this art form. The aim of this article is to analyse the role of Metin And as a ballet critic and to explore the impact of his ballet criticism on the artistic and institutional development of ballet in Türkiye.
