Official Regulations on School Plays in the Early Republican Period

This study examines the arrangements of school plays within the context of the education system. These arrangements were regarded by the founding cadres of the Turkish Republic as a pivotal instrument in the nationbuilding process, and, thus, attributed great importance. The primary sources of the study are the reports prepared by the authorities, relevant Regulations and articles published on the regulation of school plays. The leading methodologies of educational scientists who identified the pedagogical potential of school plays will be examined under the lights of the aforementioned documents. In parallel with the social and political atmosphere of the period, the legal regulations of the early Republican period raise a number of issues, including those related to the content of performances, the duration of their staging, methods of staging, and the choice of repertoire. In this context, this study considers how school plays were constructed as an ideological field, beyond their function of fostering appreciation for art in children and serving as an auxiliary tool in education.
