Do Unicorns Make Up an Organizational Population? An Evaluation In Terms of Demographics

Aytuğ Sözüer

Unicorns define the startups, which exceed 1 billion USD market valuations in short time owing to their competitive advantage achieved by genuine business models enhanced with information and communication technologies. This study proposes that unicorns can be recognized as an organizational population to be analyzed through theoretical perspectives. Despite unicorns operate in different sectors and were established in various parts of the world, this study assumes that their organizational forms and also the social mechanisms they are embedded resemble in several ways. In this respect, 154 unicorns and 40 exited firms are evaluated in terms of their demographical characteristics based on secondary data. This study, which is underpinned by the theory of organizational ecology, is expected to contribute to the management and organization literature by suggesting unicorns as an organizational population and pointing out a new unit of analysis.
