From Heels to Muddy Plastic Boots: Female Entrepreneurship in Male-Dominated Industries

Meri Taksi Deveciyan

The study is based on the experiences of two female entrepreneurs from the company Tazeden operating in the beekeeping sector in Türkiye and aims to draw attention to the entrepreneurial components and motivations of female entrepreneurs for daring to enter challenging male-dominated sectors. In addition, the case study uses qualitative research methods to examine the difficulties female entrepreneurs in the firm Tazeden have experienced and their entrepreneurial adventures. The study discusses the 5W1K technique using a narrative method based on basic writing principles and examines the components of entrepreneurship using the descriptive analysis method in the context of entrepreneurship motivation. Meanwhile, the study’s data were collected from Tazeden’s business documents and from female entrepreneurs using a prepared semi-structured question form and the face-to-face in-depth interview technique. As a result of the research, many different reasons were found to be effective for women entrepreneurs to dare enter challenging sectors, with the most important factors being stress, monotony, and their desire to keep control of their work and to protect their creative freedom. In addition, gender discrimination, the male-dominated culture, difficulties accessing financial resources, and lack of networking were determined as the challenges female entrepreneurs face in male-dominated sectors such as beekeeping. The limitations of the study are that the research was conducted with only one female entrepreneurship firm and that the study is not generalizable due to its use of the qualitative research method. The study is expected to contribute to the literature in terms of eliminating the gap regarding female entrepreneurship, which focus on the reasons that push or pull women toward entrepreneurship in challenging male-dominated sectors. In addition, studying the motivating factors for female entrepreneurship is thought to lead to constructive results as a guide for policy makers.

Topuklu Ayakkabılardan Çamurlu Plastik Çizmelere: Erkek Egemen Sektörlerde Kadın Girişimciliği

Meri Taksi Deveciyan
