Dental Practices During COVID-19 Pandemic

Emine Nursen Topçuoğlu

Dentists are exposed to the highest risk of occupational respiratory and droplet infections by working face-to-face with patients in an area that exists microbiota, often exposed to body fluids like saliva, blood and gingival crevicular fluid during the study, and procedures performed with air and water powered sharp instruments. So, interim guidelines were prepared during novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. According to the guidelines, dental facilities postponed elective procedures, surgeries, and non-urgent dental visits, and prioritized urgent and emergency visits and procedures. Urgent applications in dentistry during the pandemic process can be carried out in line with standard infection control measures and only with a number of additions such as a special change in personal protective equipment. Accordingly, each clinic should organize its own risk analysis and prepare protocols specific to this period. In this review, to be a guide for dentists, the differences in personal protective equipment recommended for dentistry procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic period, patient acceptance criteria; Algorithms for screening the patients for COVID-19 Status and Triaging for Dental Treatment related to the guidance and patient care of patients with suspected COVID-19 are explained in line with the recommendations of US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), American Dental Association (ADA), Turkish Dental Association (TDB) and Ministry of Health of Turkish Republic.
