Birûni in the 1046th Anniversary of his Birth: A Study on The Precious Stones and Metals
Fevzi Yılmaz, Haşim ÇayırBirûni is one of the ten greatest genuises of the world and an amazing polymath. As a polymath and scholar, he had a wide range of knowledge in many branches of science. Birûni produced lots of works in many fields of science from mathematics and physics to astronomy and pharmacy, from geology and mineralogy to geography, from social anthropology and religion to history. In spite of his invaluable contributions to many sciences, Biruni was very modest and often emphasized that success only comes from Allah. Birûni explained the characteristics of 31 different stones including diamonds, rubies and amethysts as well as malachite, magnet and glass in accordance with the principles of mineralogy that are still valid today. In his manuscript, which dates back thousand years, Birûni’s sensitivity in citing sources, explaining experimental methods, and examining results is very impressive. In his book “Precious Stones and Metals (al-Cemahir fi Ma’rifeti’l-Cevahir)”, which was translated from Arabic and published by the Historical Society of Turkish, many metals and alloys such as mercury, gold, silver, copper, iron and brass were also examined alongside minerals. The influence of the book on the following ages and even on our time, and the similarities and the differences between the processes and symbols in the work of Biruni and today’s scientific approaches, are extremely impressive.

Fevzi Yılmaz, Haşim ÇayırBirûni, şimdiye kadar gelmiş geçmiş on dehadan biridir. O, alimdir, hezarfendir, pek çok bilim dalında geniş bilgi sahibidir. Birûni matematik ve fizikten astronomi ve ezcacılığa, jeoloji ve mineralojiden coğrafyaya, sosyal antropoloji ve dinden tarihe kadar pek çok alanda eserler vermiştir. Birûni, bir o kadar da tevazu sahibi olup, eğilmesini bilmiş ve eserlerinde sıkça başarı Allah’tandır vurgusu yapmıştır. Birûni, elmas ve yakuttan amatiste; malakit ve mıknatıstan cama kadar 31 ayrı taşı, bugün de geçerli olan mineraloji bilimi ilkeleri ile açıklamıştır. Birûni’nin günümüzden bin yıl önce yapılan el yazması kitap çalışmasında görülen, kaynak gösterme, deneysel yöntemi açıklama ve sonuçları irdelemedeki hassasiyeti çok etkileyicidir. Türk Tarih Kurumu tarafından Arapça Orijinalinden tercüme edilerek yayınlanan “Kıymetli Taşlar ve Metaller (el- Cemahir fi Ma’rifeti’lCevahir)” isimli kitabında mineraller bahsinden sonra cıva, altın, gümüş, bakır, demir ve pirinç gibi birçok metal ve alaşımlar da verilmiştir. Bu eserde verilen bilgilerin günümüze yansımaları, süreçler ve simgeler bağlamındaki benzerlikler ve farklılıklar çok anlamlıdır.
