Evaluation of 16th Century Geography and Cosmology Knowledge in Ottomans: The Case of Muṣṭafā ibn ʿAlī al-Muwaqqit
Kübra Türe YakınMuṣṭafā ibn ʿAlī al-Muwaqqit (d. 1571) is one of the Ottoman astronomy scholars in the 16th century, about whom there are many academic studies. However, within the scope of the aforementioned studies, the information he brought together on mathematical and descriptive geography has not yet gained notoriety. As it is known, the geography literature has not been subjected to a distinct periodization like other sciences, due to the diversity of the books and its place under the astronomy in the classification of sciences. In this context, the aim of our study is to analyze the sources and innovations of the geography and cosmological knowledge in its content by focusing on al-Muwaqqit’s Tuḥfa alZamān wa-Ḫarīda al-Awān and to determine the role of the obtained information in the Ottoman geography literature. Additionally, factors such as the cause of writing al-Muwaqqit’s work, its geographical horizon, its conception of the universe, the approach and citation technique of names such as Chaghmīnī, Zakariyā al-Qazwīnī, and Kamāl al-Dīn Demīrī, and the selection of Arabic-Turkish concepts will be examined. Finally, the city coordinates and theoretical information in Iʿlām al-ʿIbād fī Aʿlām al-Bilād will be compared with the theoretical information and the traces of the information about the new world will be sought.
16. Yüzyıl Osmanlı Coğrafya ve Kozmoloji Bilgisinin Değerlendirilmesi: Mustafa b. Ali el-Muvakkit Örneği
Kübra Türe YakınMustafa b. Ali el-Muvakkit (ö. 1571), hakkında çokça akademik çalışmaya rastlanan 16. yüzyıl Osmanlı astronomi âlimlerinden biridir. Ancak mezkûr incelemeler kapsamında onun matematiksel ve tasvirî coğrafya konularında bir araya getirdiği bilgiler öncelik kazanamamıştır. Bilindiği üzere coğrafya literatürü gerek yazım türlerinin çeşitliliği gerekse klasik dönem ilimler tasnifinde astronominin altında yer alması sebebiyle diğer ilimler gibi tabiri caizse belirgin bir dönemlendirmeye tâbi tutulamamıştır. Bu bağlamda çalışmamızın amacı, Mustafa b. Ali el-Muvakkit’in Tuhfetü’zZamân ve Harîdetü’l-Evân adlı eserini merkeze alarak muhtevasındaki coğrafya ve kozmoloji bilgisinin kaynakları ve yeniliklerini tahlil etmek ve elde edilen bilgilerin Osmanlı coğrafya literatüründe oynadığı rolü saptamaktır. Ayrıca söz konusu eserde Muvakkit’in eserini telif sebebi, coğrafî ufku, evren tasavvuru, farklı yüzyıllarda eser telif etmiş olan Çağmînî ve Zekeriyyâ el-Kazvînî, Kemaleddin Demîrî gibi isimlerin kitaplarına yaklaşımı ve alıntılama tekniği, Arapça-Türkçe kavramlarının seçimi gibi unsurlar irdelenecektir. Son olarak İ‘lâmü’l-İbâd fî A‘lâmi’l-Bilâd içerisindeki şehir koordinatları ve teorik bilgiler ile mukayese edilecek ve yeni dünyaya ait bilgilerin izi aranacaktır.
