The Fars State in the 12th Century
Cihat AydoğmuşoğluThe historical Fars region, which played a central role during the Persian and Sassanid periods, is today located in Southern Iran with the city of Shiraz being its administrative center. The region is also known as the cultural capital of Iran, as it contains many archaeological sites and historical buildings. In real terms, the Fars region passed under Seljuk rule from the local Iranian dynasties for the first time in the second half of the 11th century. This article will attempt to explain the situation of Fars in the 12th century as a Seljuk state. In this context, it aims to make some determinations about the political history, economy, and cultural situation of the Fars region in light of the available data. Regarding this point, I would like to point out that I will not consider all the cities in the Fars region separately but will instead try to draw a general framework. When mentioning the Turkish or the Seljuk phase, of course what is meant is the Kirman Seljuks, the Great Seljuk governors, and the Salghurids (i.e., Atabegs of Fars). This article actually intends to focus on this phase. However, due to realizing that the subject cannot be fully understood without knowing the ancient history of the region, I have tried to explain the historical adventure of the Persian region up to the Seljuk period in a few pages as an introduction while also providing some information about the historical geography. Madrasas and mosques were finally seen to have been built, waterways repaired, and some new construction activities carried out in the Fars region in the 12th century, by which I mean the Seljuk phase. Of course, no harm is had in repeating that the region had also been the focal point of political struggles in the centuries of both the Buyid and Seljuk dynasties.
