The Appearance of the Words “Kuanpu, Kunpu” in the Ancient Uyghur Legal Documents and “Kuanbu” in the Chinese Texts Found in Dunhuang
Maihefubai AiziziLegal documents, also referred to as civil documents in non-religious matters, are extremely important in terms of showing the social, cultural, economic, and legal levels of the ancient Turks. While some documents document the relations between the society and the state, others document internal societal relations. Looking at the examples given in Uyghur legal documents shows that the Uyghurs of old shopped together within certain limits in return for a certain amount of money or goods. The Uyghurs of old used materials such as cloth, fabric, animals, grain, and money as a means of payment. Uyghurs used things such as böz and kuanpu fabric, as well as coins and paper money as a means of payment and benefited from the measurement systems they’d developed with their own cultural identities in addition to the standard measurement terms for these payment methods. The attempt was made to search for the word kuanpu in Chinese records and is shown to consist of the Chinese words 官 guan [government, administration, bureaucracy, administrator, official] and 布 bu [cloth woven with cotton, linen, or cotton-like materials]. As is understood from the Chinese records, the Uighurs recognized the stamped fabric kuanpu as the official unit of currency and accepted it as money. This article evaluates the above opinion regarding the relevant Chinese and Uyghur records and thinks that this situation arose as a result of the closeness of the geography where both languages are spoken, their constant contact and interaction, and this contact and interaction being more political, economic, and commercial than cultural and scientific.
