The Travelogue of Hyecho: Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Indian Kingdoms
Kürşat YıldırımThe Korean monk Hyecho (Hui Chao in Chinese) set out from Southern China in 724 AD to India by sea to learn about the Buddha’s classics and culture. The monk next went to West Turkestan and Iran, then turned east and passed through Transoxiana, and ended his journey in the cities of Eastern Turkestan. Hyecho’s travelogue, Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five India Kingdoms, is based on the monk’s observations in the places he passed and the news he heard and is one of the main sources of Turkestan history. The traveler described things such as the daily life, material culture, religious situation, products, and clothes in the places he went during the first quarter of the 8th century. His being a personal witness to the eastward expansion of the Islamic-Arabic armies is very important. After providing brief information about the work, this paper will next present the translation and then write evaluations. Chinese sources are the primary sources of Turkic history. Because they are sometimes the only recourse, these mostly no other facility with which to compare with other sources. Despite the Chinese dynastic histories being seen as the most reliable sources, travelogues are also very important. Although travelogues often contain personal observations of the travelers and lack deep knowledge, they are the only source for many historical facts, and Hyecho’s travelogue is one such source.
Hyecho (Hui Chao) Seyahatnamesi
Kürşat YıldırımKore kökenli Budacı keşiş Hyecho (Çince: Hui Chao), Buda klasiklerini ve kültürünü öğrenmek üzere 724 yılında Güney Çin’den yola çıkıp deniz yoluyla Hindistan’a gitti. Oradan Batı Türkistan’a ve İran’a giden ve ardından doğuya dönerek Maveraünnehir’den geçen keşiş seyahatini Doğu Türkistan şehirlerinde sonlandırdı.
