The Timurids’ Urbanization and Social Life: The Case of Samarkand and Herat
Tuba TombuloğluTimur ruled the lands of the Chagatai Khanate in the Transoxiana region, settling on the throne in Samarkand in 1370 and choosing it as his capital. In addition to being the showcase of the state Timur had founded, Samarkand also became the scientific center of science of that age and a Renaissance city where thousands of artisans live. Herat became the second capital of the Timur countryside during the Mirza Shahruh period and likewise became the pearl of the Khorasan and one of the largest cities of the period. Both cities became the capital of the Timurids with their strong historical backgrounds because of the way a strong political structure was reflected in the cultural and social field. Timurid society consisted of settled people living in the city and nomadic steppe people living in the countryside. Therefore, economic and social life was shaped according to both lifestyles. In this context, the cities of Samarkand and Herat became the showcase of the historical, political, and social structure of the state Timur had founded. Understanding both capitals well involves understanding Timurid culture and civilization. Samarkand and Herat not only reflected the social structures upon which the Timurid State had left its mark but also contained their own cultural traces. Examining these cities that had been the centers of the Timurid political structure makes them the best places to get information about the Timurid society, as these places were where the economic and social life was most intense. The study will examine the social life of the society living in this geography based on the two capitals that had belonged to the Timurid State.
