Hunting-Figting Scenes of Wolves in Turkish Period Rock Paintings, Obelisks and Metal Artifacts
Yaşar ÇoruhluWolves indisputably have a special place in the history of Turkish art. Since earliest times, they have been a part of Turks’ lives, with wolves’ depictions being based on two basic understandings: 1) their functions and activities in nature and 2) the mythical and supernatural features attributed to them. Hunting and fighting make up the basic conceptual structure that gives symbolic meaning to wolf depictions or scenes about wolves. Therefore, Turkish tribes accepted wolves as an animal ancestor or animal mother and as the representative of the positive side of dualist powers. Since the Proto Turkic peoples, the Huns and Göktürks (i.e., Kökturk / Turk / Turk Khaganate) such as the Uigurs caused the formation of a symbolist environment that extended to all early Turkish periods and even Turkish-Islamic periods. Although the finds and descriptions related to wolves are also included in the chronological periods from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age (around 1,000 BC) in Inner and Central Asia, this study will describe them in chronological order and at the same time in form and meaning. The study will attempt to address the subject starting with the foundation in the Scythian (Saka), Hun (Hsiung-nu/Hiung-nu), Göktürk, and Uigurs periods and their ties in terms of meaning. Within the framework of these issues mentioned above, the study will attempt to explain wolf depictions with regard to how they appear in rock paintings, other stone works, and metalworking art based on the hunting-fighting themes in examples of artworks or descriptions.
