The History of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) in Turkey and The World

This study discusses the historical development of the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation in Turkey and around the world. Spa waters, heat, electric currents, massage, and body movements have long been used to encourage health and to treat disease. With the development of modern medicine, physical medicine in the United States and Europe expanded to include exercise and rehabilitation. Particularly after the Second World War, “physical medicine and rehabilitation” emerged as a distinct medical discipline. In Turkey, military hospitals played a leading role in physical therapy education and practice. Later, physical therapy clinics were opened in the Faculties of Medicine and the Hospitals of the Ministry of Health. With the addition of rehabilitation practices to physical medicine after 1950, modern “physical medicine and rehabilitation” was established as a branch of medicine in Turkey.

Dünyada ve Türkiye’de Fiziksel Tıp ve Rehabilitasyon (Fiziyatri) Alanının Gelişim Süreci

Bu çalışmada dünyada ve ülkemizde fiziksel tıp ve rehabilitasyon alanıyla ilgili gelişim süreci ele alınmıştır. Kaplıca suları, ısı, elektrik akımları, masaj ve beden hareketleri gibi uygulamalar ilk çağlardan beri sağlıklı kalmak ve hastalıkların tedavisi amacıyla kullanılmıştır. Modern tıbbın gelişimi ile birlikte Amerika ve Avrupa’da fiziksel tıp alanı, egzersiz ve rehabilitasyon uygulamalarını da içine alarak genişlemiş; özellikle İkinci Dünya Savaşından sonra “fiziksel tıp ve rehabilitasyon” branşı ortaya çıkmıştır. Türkiye’de askeri hastaneler fizik tedavi eğitim ve uygulamalarında öncü rol oynamıştır. Daha sonra Tıp Fakülteleri ve Sağlık Bakanlığı hastanelerinde fizik tedavi klinikleri açılmıştır. 1950’den sonra fiziksel tıbba, rehabilitasyon uygulamalarının da eklenmesiyle birlikte, Türkiye’de de modern “fiziksel tıp ve rehabilitasyon” branşı kurulmuştur.
