Digital Identities: The Primary Key to Metaeconomics

Selim YazıcıArzu Kilitci Calayır

We have physical identities that define us in the physical world we live in. In the digital world, physical identities are replaced by digital identities. We effectively use digital identities on the Web 2.0 internet in different online platforms, especially in social media, e-government, and financial transactions, in which we are actively involved. But the digital identities on Web 2.0 are not suitable for Web 3.0 internet for accessing the Metaverse because digital identities include digital assets as well as social relations in the Metaverse. For the Metaverse, which offers social and economic value through blockchain technology, smart contracts, and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), digital identities are not only an avatar used in the Metaverse, but also have important elements that will affect the contribution to the Metaverse Economy (Metaeconomy). For this reason, digital identities are of primary importance to build the Metaeconomy in terms of being personal and easily managed by the identity holder, being accessible from anywhere and anytime, being permanent and inclusive of anyone. The aim of this study is to present the importance of decentralized digital identity for the Metaverse and its contributions to Metaeconomics. Additionally, it is also intended to offer a sustainable digital identity model design based on design principles and identity management models.
