Is the Metaverse a Dream or a Colossal Potential for Humanity?

Cihan ÇılgınCeyda Ünal

The concept of the Metaverse, which has become a buzzword all over the world, gained attention especially after the company name was changed to Meta by Facebook. The Metaverse, which has a longer history with applications such as Second Life, is based on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) efforts that simulate a realistic environment. In line with technological developments, the rapid progress of virtual reality applications and hardware has caused these technologies to be more integrated into our daily lives. VR, which has many applications from the gaming industry to the healthcare, education and even the security sector, stands on the threshold of a new process, perhaps with the new paradigms created by the Covid-19 pandemic. This is exactly the point that marks the beginning of the Metaverse discussions and its development as a natural outcome of this process. From the past to the present, the Metaverse depicts a post-modern universe or cyberspace that brings physical reality to digital virtuality and creates a community through a multi-user environment over a virtual universe. Although high-speed developments, it would not be wrong to say that the Metaverse is not much different from a child in its infancy. This research aims to discuss the potentials of virtual universes and cyberspaces such as the Metaverse by examining the development of the Metaverse from the past to the present. In addition, evaluating the possible effects of this potential on today’s ways of doing business and processes is invaluable in terms of putting forward a projection about the future business world.
