Workload and Fatigue Management in Aviation

Aslı Beyhan AcarSeda Çeken

Crews responsible for flights, particularly aircraft pilots, have to manage highly complex systems. In addition, to maintain flight safety they need to quickly resolve problems in case of emergencies, regardless of the extent of their workload and fatigue. For the sake of maintaining their attention and situation awareness at a proper level, it is crucial to keep their workload and fatigue at a manageable level. Distraction and insomnia problems might negatively affect the performance of crew members and cause disastrous results. In addition, distraction and insomnia problems can bring on many negative effects such as deterioration in health, skills, competencies and social relations, increased perception of stress, and high absenteeism/turnover. In this chapter on workload and fatigue management, the concepts of workload, aviation workload, fatigue management, fatigue management in aviation, and fatigue management in in-flight crews, the relationship between workload and fatigue management in pilots, the causes of workload-based fatigue in pilots, the effects of workload and fatigue in pilots, and workload and fatigue-based aviation accidents are reviewed. Recommendations to cope with the negative effects of workload and fatigue, research findings on workload and fatigue in aviation, and suggestions for the aviation sector and researchers are also provided.
