Unruly Passengers in Aviation and Air Rage

Nermin Taşkale

Air rage events, which encompass all actors playing a role in the travel process, are among the psychosocial risk factors in airline transportation. They also cause the increment of air travel costs. The increasing number of passengers and flights increases air rage events. Today, air rage constitutes a major agenda for passengers, flight crew, companies, and international organizations. Aircraft type and flight class, travel-related factors, sociodemographic characteristics, personality traits, smoking, alcohol, or substance use, stress, fear of flying, other mental health issues, expectations about flight service, and interpersonal attributions appear to be associated with air rage incidents. These factors may occur alone or in interactions. Therefore, it is possible to examine air rage events within the scope of interpersonal conflict theories, i.e., power imbalances, behavioral approaches, and nested ecological models. Flight safety may be put at risk and fatal consequences may occur following air rage events. Additionally, adverse effects are observed on the mental health of passengers and airline employees. Moreover, airlines and organizations may suffer severe financial losses. The first point to be considered in solving this critical problem is determining and solving the factors that affect its occurrence. Restrictions on alcohol service to prevent alcohol intoxication may be an example of this approach. Staff may use warning cards or disabling equipment. Therefore, airline personnel should receive training about handling air rage incidents. It is assumed that a coordinative approach by aviation academia and the sector may contribute to innovative solutions and the prevention of air rage incidents.
