Women Pilots: Overcoming Prejudices and Barriers

Ferhat Ayyıldız

It seems that men are predominant in many aviation roles, especially in the role of pilot. Although women are entering many professions in greater numbers than ever before, the situation is different for pilots. In its early stages of the aviation sector’s development, women played an important role, yet these contributions were seen as exceptional, and thus did not ensure their adequate representation in the sector. Stereotypical beliefs might undermine women's desire to join the profession. In particular, the requirement of being away from home is seen as an obstacle for women, who are considered responsible for the home, and thus, flying is seen as a man’s domain. Although some women have overcome these problems, they continue to face prejudice, and feel pressure to constantly prove themselves. However, studies on the differences between men and women pilots show that neither has a clear advantage in terms of the qualifications needed. Because of the predicted growth rate in the aviation sector, women will play a vital role in meeting workforce needs. For this reason, the following measures are recommended: improvements in organizational culture, awareness and information activities for women and their families, greater financial support for pilot education, the adoption of work-life balance practices, and revised regulations in recruitment and training practices. Additionally, it is important to understand implicit attitudes, contextual performance, and crew resource management skills in gender-related research.
