Neuroscientific and Cognitive Approaches to Pilots’ Decision-making Processes

Neşe Ateş Saruhan

Neuroscience, as one of today’s most popular research areas, deals with such questions as how our brain makes hundreds of decisions daily and what paths are established in our brains to reach these decisions. Neuroscience research shows that in all cognitive processes like decision-making, neurons are activated to interact with each other and establish paths to complete the decision-making process. After a number of aircraft accidents, the aviation sector has started to pay significant attention to understanding pilots’ decision-making processes before and during the flight and how to improve the decision-making process of pilots to enable them to make the most efficient and accurate decisions. This chapter first emphasizes the importance of the decision-making processes of pilots, then reviews the research studies on neuroscience and cognitive approaches to explain how stress and risk perception might affect these processes. Finally, some recommendations are suggested for researchers and the aviation industry.
