Flight Phobia in Passengers and the Psychological Interventions Used for Coping

Özlem Yılmaz Halıcı

Flight phobia and different levels of flight fear/anxiety, which is a common situation, are experienced by many people with both personal and general impacts. It has been determined that especially negative experiences about flight/learning history, high level of anxiety sensitivity, personality characteristics such as high neuroticism level, other mental disorders, cognitive characteristics such as selective attention and memory bias, misinformation or lack of information about flight, physiological problems which occur related to flight, stressful life events are some factors associated with flight phobia. As a result, some people avoid flying and restrict their social and/or occupational options. Others try to manage this situation via various personal methods such as using alcohol and/or tranquilizers, praying, thinking or planning different things, inculcating themselves, focusing on the information given by the flight attendants and applying relaxation techniques such as regulating breath. In the literature, there is information about the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy, virtual reality, flight simulator, computer-supported/internetbased therapy, EMDR, group intervention programs, and psychopharmacological therapy as intervention options for flight phobia. Flight phobia can affect the aviation industry through a decrease in people’s preference of airline transportation and an increase in flight-related problems. Therefore, flight phobia should be an important issue for aviation psychology and the aviation industry. In Turkish literature there are few studies on this subject. An examination of the prevalence of flight phobia and different levels of flight fear/anxiety, possible cultural impacts, and differences in our country would be useful.
