Disabled Child and Ethics

Hatice Yıldırım Sarı

Negative attitudes and lack of knowledge towards individuals with special needs are the biggest obstacles to the right approach in individual relationships or public spaces. Negative attitudes can extend to stigma and discrimination. Children with special needs may face many ethical problems such as benefiting from public rights, education, access to health, participation in decisions related to their own health, and privacy. Consent, pain diagnosis, palliative care, inclusion in research, and organ transplantation are the subjects that are especially emphasized. Children with special needs experience difficulties in access to health services. Although significant progress has been made in the last fifty years, children with special needs still have a lower life expectancy than the general population. Approaches aimed at increasing their skills will contribute to the provision of an ethical and rights-based approach as well as preventing discrimination. It is useful to communicate directly with individuals with special needs and to communicate effectively in order to prevent ethical violations. While nurses and other health professionals act with professional ethical codes, the inclusion of individuals with special needs and their families in care allows the care to be carried out in accordance with ethical principles. It is important to act by respecting the life, dignity, and rights of individuals with special needs, to prepare the necessary ground for their participation in social life, and to benefit from public services, in terms of ensuring the well-being of the individual.
