Nursing and Ethics
Ethics in Nursing Education: History, Development and Importance
Olga İncesuAs health care providers, nurses are the health workers who work closest to the individual and his family. These close relationships and the rapid changes in health/care technologies that have occurred in recent years have caused nurses to face increasing ethical challenges. It is possible for nurses to be aware of ethical principles and to develop their skills to solve ethical problems through ethical training during their nursing training and in their professional lives. The aim of ethical education in nursing is to educate nurses who can identify ethical problems, develop solutions to ethical issues, and be ethically accountable. Nurses should take into account ethical principles and legal obligations in carrying out all nursing roles. Ethical principles define the principles of relationships between nurses, patients/healthy individuals, colleagues, and other professionals. Nursing ethics has been included in the nursing curriculum since the 1960s. There is no consensus on conducting ethical education. There are therefore differences in practice between countries and nursing schools. Many developments in the world and in our country have continued to take place, leading to the development of ethical education. Ethics education should be integrated into all stages of nursing education and professional life, and social needs and transformations should be updated with challenges in healthcare technologies. This section of the book aims to present the relationship between profession and ethics, the history of professional ethics education, developments in our country and in the world that led to the emergence of ethics training, the importance of ethical education, and examples of nursing ethics in different countries.
