The Nature of Nursing

Ethics is the investigation of whether behavior is right or wrong. Acting in accordance with professional ethical principles is an integral part of the nursing profession. The responsibilities of nurses, who have a significant impact on the quality of health care, include the highest level of health care and rehabilitative services to protect, maintain and improve public health. Acting in accordance with ethical principles during the fulfillment of these responsibilities is an effective factor in increasing the quality of care and work performance of nurses. Nurses have to make some decisions in care practices, in the life process or in the terminal period, and they experience more ethical problems with the experience of complex situations. Especially the development and changes in health technology, prolonged life expectancy, chronic diseases, changes in cultural values specific to society can be counted among the reasons why the ethical problems experienced by nurses have become more complex. In addition, fair distribution of limited resources, ensuring and maintaining the privacy and autonomy of the individual, communication with professional members and other health professionals can be stated as other areas where ethical dilemmas are experienced. In light of technological development and change, nursing, which includes science and art, questioning the ethical and humanistic dimensions of care more and its approach that focuses on professional ethical principles is extremely important for the solution of ethical problems. The solution to ethical problems not only improves the quality of care provided to healthy/patient individuals, but is also effective in preventing professional burnout and turnover of nurses.

Etik bilimi, davranışların doğru ya da yanlış olduğunun incelenmesidir. Mesleki etik ilkelere uygun hareket edilmesi, hemşirelik mesleğinin ayrılmaz bir parçasıdır. Sağlık hizmeti kalitesi üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahip olan hemşirelerin sorumlulukları arasında, toplum sağlığını korumak, sürdürmek ve geliştirmek için en üst düzeyde sağlık bakım ve rehabilite edici hizmetler yer almaktadır. Bu sorumlulukların yerine getirilmesi sırasında etik ilkelere uygun hareket edilmesi, hemşirelerin sundukları bakımın kalitesini ve çalışma performansını arttırmada etkili bir faktördür. Hemşireler bakım uygulamalarında, yaşam süreci ya da terminal dönemde bazı kararlar almak durumunda olup, karmaşık durumların yaşanması ile daha fazla etik sorun deneyimlemektedirler. Özellikle sağlık teknolojisindeki gelişim ve değişimler, yaşam süresinin uzaması, kronik hastalıklar, topluma özgü kültürel değerlerdeki değişimler hemşirelerin yaşadığı etik sorunların daha karmaşık hale gelmesinin nedenleri arasında sayılabilir. Ayrıca sınırlı kaynakların adil dağılımı, mahremiyetin, bireyin özerkliğinin sağlanması ve sürdürülmesi, meslek üyeleri ve diğer sağlık profesyonelleri ile iletişim konuları, etik ikilemlerin yaşandığı diğer alanlar olarak ifade edilebilir. Bilim ve sanatı içinde barındıran hemşireliğin teknolojik gelişim ve değişimin ışığında, bakımın etik ve hümanist boyutunu daha fazla sorgulaması ve mesleki etik ilkeleri merkeze alan yaklaşımı, etik sorunların çözümü için son derece önemlidir. Etik sorunların çözümü, sağlıklı/hasta bireye sunulan bakımın kalitesini arttırmakla birlikte, aynı zamanda hemşirelerin mesleki tükenmişliğinin ve işten ayrılmaların önlenmesinde de etkilidir.
