Forensic Issues and Ethics in Psychiatry

Emre Çiydem

The field of forensic psychiatry addresses the intersection of law and mental health. Forensic psychiatric nurses are specialized professionals with knowledge and experience in mental health care and the legal system. Forensic and ethical issues are integral components of forensic psychiatry. Forensic psychiatric nurses face various ethical dilemmas in their practice. They may face ethical dilemmas regarding confidentiality, privacy and data protection, anti-discrimination, and involuntary hospitalization and treatment. Forensic psychiatric nurses play an important role in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals involved in legal proceedings. The roles and responsibilities of the forensic psychiatric nurse include performing a comprehensive mental assessment, individualized care and treatment planning, crisis intervention, patient advocacy, and resolving ethical dilemmas. Among the issues that forensic psychiatry nurses have ethical dilemmas about are marriage, divorce, being placed under guardianship, gender reassignment, and compulsory hospitalization. Forensic psychiatric nurses can refer to international guidelines in resolving ethical dilemmas. Forensic psychiatric nurses make an important contribution to the field with their expertise, knowledge, and skills, ensuring that the well-being and rights of people with mental health problems are protected within the justice system. Forensic psychiatric nurses should provide services by professional ethics and legal standards to ensure they provide quality care ethically and legally. This section discusses forensic psychiatric issues and ethical problems that may confront a nurse in forensic psychiatry.
