Newborn and Ethi̇cs

Sema BayraktarMerve Ertunç Soycan

The issue of ethics in newborns has been neglected for many years. Newborns who were seen as weak in the past were left to die and newborns were not protected in terms of rights. With the development of technology and science, neonatal intensive care units were established, and new-generation antibiotics started to be used in the treatment of newborns. Thanks to these developments, premature, low birth weight and very risky babies with growth retardation have started to survive compared to the past and the life chances of newborns have increased. For this reason, the issue of newborns and ethics has begun to gain importance. At the same time, the number and complexity of ethical challenges has steadily increased. Many ethical principles have been determined for newborns. For newborns who cannot make decisions for themselves, healthcare professionals must observe and implement the principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. Since neonatal nurses are the health professionals who spend the most time with the newborn and its family, they have great duties and responsibilities regarding ethical dilemmas. Neonatal nurses should honestly share information about their babies’ nursing care and the newborn’s condition. The neonatal nurse should always work for the best interests of the newborn. Neonatal nurses should play a key role in preventing ethical dilemmas and ethical conflicts between parents and other healthcare professionals. The role of the family is important in ethical dilemmas. When deciding on ethical issues, physicians and families should decide together after families are fully informed.
