“Decontextualization” as a Risk Factor in The Process of Safeguarding Mawlawi Sema Ceremonies
Seda Aksüt ÇobanoğluThe acquisition of UNESCO cultural heritage status is an important and meaningful step in the process of heritage safeguarding. However, this status might be a factor that damages the safeguarding process of the heritage in some cases. One reason for this could be that the UNESCO inscription increases the visibility of a cultural heritage both in the world and in the country to which it belongs and accordingly enhances the interest and demand for the heritage. Although intangible cultural heritage has a dynamic and changeable nature, the process of transforming cultural elements into heritage can damage the internal and special character of these elements in some cases. The aforementioned cases create risk factors that threaten the authenticity of the heritage in the safeguarding and sustainability of cultural heritage and these risk factors can trigger each other in a chain. The Mawlavi sema ceremony was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008 and attained the status of world heritage. As an element of cultural heritage with UNESCO inscription, it is performed both in the mawlavihanes, which are its own cultural places, and outside these places. Although it has an essential cultural value as an example of intangible cultural heritage, especially with the growing interest and demand of tourists after it reached UNESCO’s world heritage status, the increase of “whirling performances with tickets” has brought the Mawlawi sema ceremony to the fore with its economic value. This situation has led to the Mawlavi sema ceremony being performed outside of its own cultural context. This study touches upon the process through which the Mawlawi sema ceremony has become an intangible cultural heritage. It also briefly mentions the risk factors in the process of safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage and examines “decontextualization” from these risk factors by analyzing examples specific to Mawlawi sema ceremonies.
