Changes in Zooplankton Populations After Mucilage Events in the Northeastern Marmara Sea

Melek İşinibilir Okyar

The abundance and community structure of zooplankton in the Sea of Marmara were investigated during the mucilage event that occurred in 2008 and 2021 and compared with the no mucilage periods. While zooplankton abundance and biodiversity were observed at high values when mucilage was not observed, a sudden decrease occurred in these values with the formation of mucilage, especially in June 2021, the zooplankton community structure completely changed. As a result, the Marmara Sea's zooplankton abundance and community structure experienced major alterations as a result of the mucilage events that took place in 2008 and 2021.
