The Balkanization of Virtual Sociality: Shifting Boundaries and Emerging Terrains in Chinese Youth Subcultural Practices

Zixue TaiDayong Zhou

Youth subcultures have been a robust area of intellectual debates across a variety of academic disciplines and disciplinary traditions. Informed by a synthetic analysis of 57 academic publications in leading Chinese journals, this chapter offers a synoptic overview of the front-line developments of the dominant manifestations in Chinese youth subcultural practices and lifestyles during the era of social and personalized media. Specific emphasis is placed on the intervening role of the latest media technologies and applications in shaping youth subcultural formations and virtual affective groups. This discussion interconnects the prevalent conceptual lens in Chinese subcultural studies with current theoretical deliberations in Western societies.
